April 21st : Wonderland The 90's ( Appeltern )

Saturday April 21st seemed to be our first outdoor festival, but when we arrived at the location ( it was a beautiful new location ) it was a large tent ... which was quite okay because it was raining off and on.

The location was recreationarea 'Strand Maaslanden' ( Gouden Ham ), which is located along the river 'De Maas'. Lots of water and green around and a small beach.

Our settime was 7.30 PM, and when we arrived the tent was pretty crowded. The organisation ( X-Factor Events ) was satisfied since it was their first time here at this location.

Although the theme was 'happy hardcore', we always want to put some early hardcore in it. Before us, Dune was playing and he also put in some old hardcore tracks. For us the sign, that this was not going to be any problem.

We were ready to go! We started off with Raveworld, and the crowd went mad! A good way to start our set. After a short while, Burning Love came by ( in the Weirdo & Sim remix ) and everybody sang along. So cool! After an hour, 2 girls and a guy asked me if it was possible to announce that their friend had his birthday that evening. That sounded good to me and after a couple of tracks I asked my dj to put in a small break. I let the birthdayboy on stage together with his brother, and let the audience sing 'Happy Birthday To You" in Dutch. Everybody sang along, it was an awesome feeling.

Now it was time to rock the last part ... we continued our set with Prophet's 'Allright Now Here We Go' which is one hell of a banger! and rocked a lot of happy hardcore tracks. But ofcourse the last tracks was reserved for The Viper's Remix of Burning Love. It really kicked ass! We couldn't end the set better.

We got a lot of good response from organisation and audience. For me, the peak in our set was the '98 To Piano' bootleg where all people put their hands up in the air. LOVED it!

Thanks you X-Factor Events for having us and the audience for this massive party.

April 14th | Pump Up The 90's - Venray

Saturday was a special gig ... it was the last gig that Ludmilla did. Will she ever come back ...? Time will tell. Ofcourse she is the female voice of Critical Mass, and a familiar face. Last saturday was also the last gig for us as live act. If there will ever be another live act, I don't know ...We will see ... ;)

Our gigtime was 11.30 PM till 12.00 AM, and I arrived at 11.20 PM. The place to be : Evenementenhal Venray ( former club Zenith ). Other acts were The Klubbheads and our friends from the Party Animals.

It was crowded! We started off with our 3 radio hits ( Burning Love, Believe In The Future and Happy Generation ) but the crowd was hard to move. Then we went on with Dancing Together. Slowly there were some hands in the air. It was time for some bass! We went on with 'Lift Me Up', a track that was introduced on the Thunderdome IX compilation ( you can download it here : Critical Mass Soundcloud )

After this track, it's remix time! People were ready to sing along, and they did! The 2 Weirdo & Sim remixes were blasting through the speakers and people sang along. Ludmilla got a good goodbye!

April 13th | Sunsation Pre-party

Yesterday we had a long ride ahead, all the way up to the north of Holland. 15km from the city Groningen, lies a little village called Middelstum. Every year they organize a festival called 'Sunsation', and this year they held a 80's and 90's pre-party to get this festival started before they big guns come out on Saturday.

It was a 400km ride before we arrived. We were running late because of a big cargo truck on the freeway, which took 2 lanes so no car could pass it. We had to play at 12.30 AM and we arrived at 12.28 PM because of it. No worries, it was time to rock!

Our gig was in the 2nd area and there were like 50 people. Could we get these people dancing and going crazy before end of the eve ... ? We started very carefull with some radio edits so that we could try the audience. I've noticed that they liked it, but that they wanted a harder bass. No problem!

We put in some great tracks and did some request in between. It was awesome! People were going crazy the way they should. This was some real hardcorepower! We had to close down at 2 AM and the last track we did ( All Fucked Up by E-Rick & Tactic ) was at 2.04 AM.

The people screamed for more, but we couldn't. Hmmm ... I asked for one and the organisation said okay. Now it was time for a non hardcore classic .. My favorite : Prodigy - Breathe With Me!

People went nuts and afterwards we got many compliments. Such a cool respond!

After our gig we got some snacks to go, and again we were on our way to the beautiful south of Holland ... another 400km ride, back home.

Next year we will be in area 1, the organisation already confirmed! So all good ....

April 8th | Oldschool Madness - Banging Easter

After our big adventure in Moscow, it was time to rock Club Zak in Uelsen .. settime 4.00 - 5.00 ..

We arrived at Brussels Airport around 11 PM, got our bags and went to get some coffees at our favorite place, Starbucks. After our relaxing moment, it was time to get on the road ... The drive was about 3.5 hours.

After a long drive, we arrived at Club Zak at about 3.30 AM ... perfect ... We changed clothes, and went to the second area. There were about 50 people, of which 10 were dancing ... perfect challenge to get more people dancing ofcourse ...

Again we started with 'Your Smile' ( Viper Remix ) to let people know what we are all about ... ( the dj's before us were kind of hardstylish / mainstream ) We wanted to let people dance to the early sound! And it worked ... 10 people became 20, 20 became 40, and 40 became 50 screaming people who went nuts at almost 5 AM ... real die hards ! We love that !

At 5.15 AM we went home ... to Heerlen ... again 3.5 hours. It was a great Critical Mass weekend though. 9.00 AM was my bedtime ... thank you MC Syco for the booking and thank you die-hard partypeople in Uelsen!

April 7th | The Moscow Adventure

Saturdaymorning, 7.30 AM ... I picked up my dj and we went to Brussels Airport ( Zaventem )

Arrived at the airport around 9.00 AM, we started our day there with a nice coffee at our friends from Starbucks. That's a good way to start your day. Next thing : CHECK IN !

For once we had plenty of time ( not common for me ) so all good. Also for once I had all the documents ( thanks to our agency Studio No.98 bookings ) so this part was all taken care of.

The plane was in time and at 12.00 we were on it's way to Moscow. My dj already went once ( for putting down a house set ) but for me, it was the first time. I had no idea what to expect. I've heard lots of good things, but it's always a question if it will turn out that way ...

At about 5 PM we arrived in a snowy Sheremetyevo Airport. I was pretty cold for Dutch standards, and I didn't really had any winterclothes but I could not complain. Because of the many traffic jams, our pick up was a bit late but that was no problem. We had free wifi at the airport. We picked up by Pasha ( dj Nail ) and his girl Olga. The first we've noticed, is that the cars looked really dirty! Plus the many, many cars. How much cars can a city have ? Because of that many cars, the 40 km drive turned out to be almost 2 hours to our hotel, the Katarina City Hotel. The hotel was definitely not bad. In room 204 we unpacked our bags and most important, our Macbooks. ( because again, we had free wifi ! )

At around 8 PM we were picked up by Kirill and his wife Natasha. We drove to a restaurant named 'Korchma', a restaurant were they serve Oekraine dishes. At the restaurant we also met Kelly ( Evil Activities ) and his MC, rapper E-Life, plus their driver/guide Julia.

Dinner was pretty good, especially the potatoes ... As apetizer we also ate some specialty, which name I forgot.  The 'pancakes' were really good, but the red caviar was not really my thing. Pretty salty.

At 11 PM we left the restaurant and went back to the hotel for a quick refreshment, a change of clothes and to pick up our music. We were all set!

At about 12 AM we arrived at the club ( called Graf ... ) it was a pretty cool club, who from the inside looked a bit like the Paradiso in Amsterdam, with a balcony. As soon as we came in, people start shaking hands so we got a warm welcome. This could turn out to be a very good gig!

Once backstage we had to sign stuff and take pictures. The JE Crew boys ( organisation ) were very nice and also the many dj's backstage were really nice. At 1 AM it was time to rock.

We started with 'Your Smile' ( Viper Remix ) and the tone was set. This was set to be not a great night, but an epic night! We kicked in some happy hardcore tunes, and lot's of early hardcore tracks. The people sang along with all our songs and the other happy tunes, it was freaking awesome. They danced their asses off! Much respect, cause this is the way it should be!

At the middle of our set, we had small pause to see if they were still awake. And they were! It was time for the greatest happy hardcore song out there ( Wonderfull Days by Mental Theo and Lownoise ) EPIC! After this track people pointed at me for doing a crowdsurf, and so I did! It was awesome! I had never done it before. It felt great! Almost at the end of our set I did it again. Our set went good, we were satisfied and seeing the people dance that much and giving us such good feedback tells me they were satisfied too.

After our set it was time for Kelly and Elvis ( Evil Activities and E-Life ) to rock the house! And they did ... BIGTIME! What energy they gave! My dj and I went into the audience, and at that point it was picture and autograph time ... I hadn't wrote autographs like this when I was still performing in the 90's .. Good feeling though ...

We were in the club till around 5, and in the hotel Kelly, Bruce and I went for an after in the hotel lobby. Just a good chat about music, and something to eat. After a check at the menu, we all went for the Alex Bar Burger ( not too good at 6 in the morning but okay ) An hour later we went to bed.

Five hours later I was awake again. It was time to see some of Moscows beauty! We couldn't leave without seeing the famous Red Square right .. ? As a real tourist with big camera I took pictures from some very nice looking buildings our guide Dasha showed us. Afterwards we went for a nice lunch at a TGI Fridays. After that we went down to the hotel with the subway. There we were picked up and after a hour ride we were at Sheremetyevo Airport again. Our Moscow adventure was over.

I hope we get the chance to perform here again, because it was really wicked. One of the BEST gigs ever! Thanks to JE CREW ( Dj Nail, Yury and all others), and OZZO Promo ( Stanislav ), Kirill & Natasha and last but not least Dasha and brother. This was one awesome experience! Till next time ! ( pictures will follow )
